Internationalisation Fellowships offered to researchers at postdoctoral level

The Carlsberg Foundation is announcing Internationalisation Fellowships aimed at giving early-career researchers the opportunity to combine a research stay abroad with a reintegration period at a Danish research institution. The deadline for applications is 1 April 2026.

Each year, the Carlsberg Foundation allocates several million kroner to the development of research talent and to strengthening the younger generation of researchers who will shape Denmark’s future research environments. This is achieved, among other initiatives, through targeted funding calls specifically aimed at researchers at postdoctoral level.

From today until 1 April 2026, applications may be submitted for Internationalisation Fellowships. The purpose of the fellowships is to enable early-career postdocs to gain valuable research experience abroad without risking losing their foothold in the Danish research environment upon completion of their stay. The Internationalisation Fellowships are therefore structured to allow a research stay abroad to be combined with a subsequent reintegration period at a Danish research institution.

The stay abroad must be longer than the period in Denmark

Internationalisation Fellowships are awarded for periods of two to three years and require that the period spent abroad is longer than the subsequent period spent in Denmark. Applicants may, however, choose to remain abroad for the entire fellowship period, and it is also possible to divide the stay between two different host institutions abroad.

Before the start of the grant period, applicants must either have obtained a PhD degree or expect to obtain one. As applicants must be able to document a strong connection to Danish research in order to be considered for Internationalisation Fellowships, the PhD degree must have been awarded by a Danish research institution.

The deadline for submission of applications is 1 April 2026.

Reintegration Fellowships will be offered for the last time in the autumn of 2026

Following the merger last year of the Carlsberg Foundation’s two grant types - the Internationalisation Fellowships and the Reintegration Fellowships - into the Internationalisation Fellowships, the Reintegration Fellowships will be discontinued as an independent type of grant at the end of 2026.

The final deadline for applying for the Reintegration Fellowships will therefore be in connection with the Autumn Call 2026. This call will be published on 31 May 2026, with an application deadline of 1 September 2026.

Science for Denmark since 1876

This year marks exactly 150 years since the Carlsberg Foundation was established by brewer J.C. Jacobsen with the purpose of returning part of the profits from his brewery, Carlsberg, to society in the form of grants for independent basic research.

In 2026, we celebrate 150 years of science for Denmark from the Carlsberg Foundation by honoring both independent basic research and the Danish foundation model through a wide range of activities.
