Purpose
Through these Fellowships the Carlsberg Foundation wishes to promote the internationalisation of talented young researchers from Denmark.
Who?
These fellowships are awarded to promising PhDs for a one- to two-year uninterrupted research stay at one or two leading international research institutions outside Denmark.
To be eligible for an internationalisation fellowship, the applicant must hold a PhD degree or obtain their PhD degree before the start date of the grant period.
The exact date on which the PhD degree was obtained must be clearly stated in the CV. The Carlsberg Foundation reserves the right to request additional documentation.
Applicants who, at the time of the application deadline, have more than three years’ experience since obtaining their PhD degree are not eligible.
Any periods of leave will be accepted as extensions of this time limit (parental leave, family care leave, illness, military service, etc.).
The fellowships cannot be applied for as a continuation of other postdoctoral fellowships abroad.
The applicant must have demonstrated a strong connection to Danish research (see FAQ for a definition).
Applicants who are already affiliated to the international research institution(s) at the time of the application deadline, will not be eligible to apply.
An affiliation can for instance consist of having completed a PhD or having previously been employed at the research institution(s). Shorter research stays are not understood as affiliations.
The applicant will be expected to take up residence in the country where the international research institution(s) is located during the entire period of the fellowship.
What?
The internationalisation fellowships are generally tax-free in Denmark and amount to:
DKK 450,000 per year if the applicant is travelling without partner
DKK 500,000 per year if the applicant is travelling with partner
DKK 550,000 per year if the applicant is travelling with child(ren)
The amount is granted as a fixed rate, which must cover all costs.
In cases where the applicant plans to move to a particularly expensive location, it is possible to apply for up to an additional DKK 60,000 per year to cover extra high rent and living expenses.
The additional DKK 60,000 must be applied for at the time of submission of the application. It is not possible to apply at a later time.
If the application is granted, the Carlsberg Foundation offers a session with a tax expert, free of charge, to those grant holders who need professional advice on how they can expect to be taxed during their stay abroad and how to fill in their tax forms.

FAQ
The Carlsberg Foundation only supports scientific activities with a strong connection to Danish research, as specified in the Charter of the Foundation, Sect. 9.1. The board of the Carlsberg Foundation interprets this to mean that the applicant may, for example:
- hold a degree from a Danish research institute and subsequently have been employed at a Danish research institute; or
- through personal or family relations be strongly connected to Danish research; or
- possess so strong and demonstrated ties to Danish research that even if the applicant moves abroad to conduct research, e.g., in connection with an internationalization fellowship, the applicant intends to return to Danish research upon the completion of their stay.
These examples are not exhaustive. It is ultimately up to the board of the Carlsberg Foundation to decide whether a connection is considered strong or not.

No, the Internationalisation Fellowships are granted as fixed rates.
The Carlsberg Foundation expects that the applicant will take up residence in the country where the international research institution is located during the period of the fellowship. This implies, that the board only in rare cases support particularly strong grant applications for international institutions located near Denmark, for example Lund University.
An affiliation can for instance consist of having completed a PhD or having previously been employed at the research institution. Shorter research stays are not understood as affiliations. In case of doubt, the Board will make the final decision.
